SUMMARY:Mushroom Walk with Michaeline Mulvey
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column width=”2/3″][vc_column_text] \n\nFriday\, September 5\, 2025 : 4:00 – 6:00 pm\nGardiner\, Maine\nContact: Ed Friedman at 666-3372.\nFriends of Merrymeeting Bay (FOMB) is pleased to offer an upcoming mushroom walk as part of their 2025 Outside Summer Series. On September 5th join Michaeline Mulvey\, President of the Maine Mycological Association as she leads this walk on wooded property along the Kennebec River in Gardiner.\nMushrooms are the fleshy\, spore-bearing fruiting body of a fungus\, typically produced above ground\, on soil\, or on its food source. The generic or stereotypical mushroom has at minimum a stalk and cap with gills or sponge beneath it that releases spores. While the fruiting body of a mushroom is above ground\, most of it is below ground in a complex web (the original worldwide web!) known as mycelium.\nParticipants should dress appropriately for roaming around in the woods and bring a basket\, knife and some small paper or wax paper bags. If you have specimens from home you would like help identifying you are welcome to bring samples. This has been an exceptionally dry summer so it will be interesting to see what species have persevered and discuss what it takes to do so.\nThe FOMB Summer Outside! Series is the warm weather counterpart to FOMB’s popular Winter Speaker Series and this is the last outing of 2025. FOMB’s 29th annual Winter Speaker Series begins October 8th via Zoom and features former Maine Secretary of State Matt Dunlap (now Maine’s Auditor) and current Maine Secretary of State Shenna Bellows discussing the upcoming ballot initiative with a program entitled Voter ID: Solving No Problem.\nPre-registration is required for FOMB outings. Register for this walk with and get directions from Ed Friedman at 666-3372.\nThe full FOMB Summer & Winter series schedules and details are on the web at: www.friendsofmerrymeetingbay.org\nFor more information about FOMB’s programs call Ed Friedman at 666-3372.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/3″][vc_widget_sidebar sidebar_id=”sidebar_1″][/vc_column][/vc_row]

SUMMARY:Cathance Paddle with Stan & Michelle Moody
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text] \nSummer Outside Series 2025\nCathance River Paddle\n\nThursday\, July 10\, 2025 – 12:30 – 2:30 pm\nBowdoinham\, Maine\nContact: Michelle Moody at 406-5221\n\n  \n \nAn intermediate paddle in Bowdowinham \nSee FOMB Archives for full description \n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\nFriends of Merrymeeting Bay kicks off their 2025 Summer Outside Series Thursday July 10th with a paddle excursion on the tidal Cathance River in Bowdoinham and Topsham. The trip is led by Michelle & Stan Moody and is scheduled for 12:30-2:30 pm on the 10th. Paddlers will depart from the Bowdoinham Town Landing. Preregistration is necessary with Michelle at 406-5221. Further details are also available from her.\nThe group will paddle leisurely up the Cathance River on an incoming tide towards Topsham but gunk-holing along the way where participants might even have a chance for a swim while exploring nooks and crannies off the main stem. The tide will assist in both directions. All boats must have waterproof flotation and be at least 12 feet long. PFDs must be worn at all times on the water.\nThe Cathance is one of six rivers flowing into Merrymeeting Bay\, an ecologically important freshwater tidal riverine inland delta of international importance draining nearly 40% of Maine. The Bay supports twelve species of diadromous fish including striped bass\, American eel\, Atlantic salmon\, two types of sturgeon and various river herring. It is a feeding and breeding ground for migrating waterfowl\, and home to a number of endangered and globally rare plants including Eaton’s bur marigold (Bidens eatonii) \, estuary bur marigold (Bidens hyperborea)\, spongy arrowhead (Sagittaria calycina ssp. spongiosa)\, Parker’s pipewort (Eriocaulon parkeri)\, and Long’s bittercress (Cardamine longii)\, all found on the Cathance. Likely wildlife sightings include ospreys\, eagles\, and sturgeon\, who jump clean out of the water. Herons\, muskrats\, and beavers also call this place home as does the state endangered redfin pickerel which has only been found in the Bay area and in Phippsburg.\nFOMB works to protect and improve the Bay through land conservation\, education\, research and advocacy. Their Summer Outside! series is the warm weather counterpart to the popular Winter Speaker Series. Events are usually free and open to the public. Their next outing will be a Tree Walk on August 24th from 4:00-6:00 pm in Bowdoinham led by Cathy Reynolds. Please call Ed Friedman at 666-3372 to pre-register and for location.\nTo receive more information about FOMB’s programs call Ed Friedman at 666-3372. The full Summer Outside! schedule is on the web at: www.fomb.org\n\n\n\n\n\n\n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

SUMMARY:Our Town! Adventures in Richmond History
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text] \n\n\n2024-2025 Zoom Speaker Series\n\n\n\n\nOur Town! Adventures in Richmond History\n\nPiti Theater and Marcia Buker Elementary 4th Graders 2023-2024\n\nWednesday\, December 11\, 2024 at 7:00 pm\nSee Zoom Recording Below\n\n\nWorking in the Mill\n\n\n\n\nFriends of Merrymeeting Bay’s (FOMB) third presentation of their 28th annual Winter Speaker Series\, Our Town! Adventures in Richmond History features the Piti Theatre Company and the 2023-2024 Fourth Graders of Richmond’s Marcia Buker Elementary School. Winter Speaker Series presentations are again being held via Zoom and are accessible via hyperlink at the top of the FOMB web page: fomb.org. This event takes place Wednesday\, December 11th at 7 pm.\nThis program premieres the “living history” streaming theatre-meets-documentary work FOMB and Piti Theatre did in early 2024 with 4th grades of the Marcia Buker elementary school in Richmond. The project looks at historical\, cultural and social roots of our contemporary environmental challenges here in Merrymeeting Bay and around mid-coast Maine through the lens of local history-in this case ice harvesting\, dairy farming\, ship building and spinning mills\, topics chosen by the students. In collaboration with Piti Theatre Company (via a one week residency and more)\, the program produced film\, songs\, script\, and research becoming a resource for local schools\, colleges\, libraries\, historical societies and conservation groups.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMoving Ice Onto the Conveyor and Into the Ice House\n\n\n\nSimilar examples are Piti’s “Dexter and the Dinosaurs” theatre-meets-film project produced in Greenfield\, MA. (Note the kids in this production all regularly attended acting classes.) and closer to home\, a program FOMB and Piti did with approximately 80 Bowdoin Central School students in 2021-2022\, premiering in May 2023\, (see 2023 FOMB newsletter pages 2 & 3) and that may be viewed at the bottom of this page. The FOMB 2024 Spring newsletter (pages 2 & 3) feature a good story on the Richmond project.\nFOMB hosts their Winter Speaker Series October-May\, on the second Wednesday of each month. Due to the Covid 19 pandemic and ability for participants to attend from out of the area\, the series continues via Zoom. The FOMB January 8th presentation: Getting to Know Rachel Carson\, features Barbara Vickery\, retired Director of Conservation at The Nature Conservancy\, Maine Chapter. This event takes place at 7:00 pm with the Zoom registration link available at www.fomb.org a week or so prior to the presentation.\nSpeaker Series presentations are free\, open to the public. Visit www.fomb.org to see speaker biographies\, full event schedules\, video recordings of past presentations\, become a member\, and learn more about how you can help protect beautiful Merrymeeting Bay and the Gulf of Maine.\nFor more information contact FOMB at 207-666-3372 or edfomb@comcast.net.\n\n\n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
